Thank you for your appreciation of my translation of Jared Rubin’s review of his own book Why the West got rich and the Middle East did not. I made the translation because the review came my way and because of my own interest in economic history. My previous translations of reviews of books on similar themes to the present one were kindly published by IEN. Although books in this genre are akin to grand theorisation of social change and development spatially and temporally, they nevertheless open up new ways of looking at historical developments. One is hopeful that Iraqi historians will make a distinctive contribution in this area.
With this in mind, I look forward to the publication of your massive tome The Economics of Iraq – ancient past to distant future, a fresh contribution to the economic/political evolution of Iraq.

“I read your piece on Jared Rubin’s analysis of why the Middle East is in a poor state, and the worrying future prospects for the region.
It is good (if I may say so) to bring such analysis to the attention of those who subscribe to the ‘Iraqi Economists Network’ and who are unaware of such analysis. We are only two months away from the general elections in Iraq. It is timely, so, thank you.
I am actually an admirer of Timur Kuran’s work and that of (the late) Hadi al-Alawi who (in 1995) wrote in a similar vein.
