Designs for Baghdad Metro finished

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Prime Minister’s advisor on transport affairs, Nasser Al-Asadi, said on Thursday that the designs for the Baghdad Metro project have been completed.

Al-Asadi explained that with 64 stations spread across 148 kilometers, the Baghdad Metro project will cover 85 percent of the capital city, including all holy sites, hospitals, colleges, and tourism districts, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The Chairman of the National Investment Commission (NIC), Haider Makiya, said in early February that Iraq has decided to start accepting bids for the much-delayed project to construct its first elevated metro in the country’s capital, Baghdad.

The Iraqi official noted that international companies interested in bidding on the $2.5 billion Baghdad Metro project can do so via the NIC website.

In a ceremony held to launch the investment opportunities of Baghdad Metro, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, said that the project represents an important shift in the transportation sector in Baghdad, where the population exceeds eight million.

In a meeting held last month with Al-Sudani, representatives of China Railway demonstrated the company’s capacity to take part in executing the Baghdad Metro project.

The Chinese company is implementing the Nisour Square development project in central Baghdad as part of the government’s projects to relieve traffic congestion in the Iraqi capital.

Representatives of China Railway provided an explanation of the expertise the company has to carry out this important project, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

26 multinational corporations from China, India, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Qatar have shown their interest in taking part in the metro project’s execution.
