Dr. Walid Khadduri, Senior Petroleum Expert and Advisor to MEES

Dr Walid Khadduri former Middle East Economic Survey (“MEES”) Editor in Chief and currently MEES Consultant. He joined MEES in 1981 after working for seven years as Director of Information and International Relations at the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) in Kuwait. He was also a member of the Political Science Department at Kuwait University (1973-1975) and prior to that he served as Director of Research at the Institute for Palestine Studies in Beirut (1970-1973). Born in Baghdad, he received a BA in Social Science Studies from Michigan State University in 1963 and graduated from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in 1972 with a PhD in International Relations. Dr. Khadduri has published and lectured extensively on the oil industry and the Middle East situation and is the recipient of several journalistic awards including the King ‘Abd Allah Bin ‘Abd al-’Aziz Al Saud Award “Petroleum Journalism Excellence”, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 2007 and The first OPEC Award for Journalism “Outstanding Career in Oil Reporting”, Vienna, 2009.

Hisham Al Ali

Dr. Hashim Al-Ali, Senior Macroeconomist, Planning and Public Finance Advisor

Dr. Hashim Al-Ali is an international macroeconomic development planning and modelling specialist. Dr. Al-Ali has worked and associated with various international development and financial organizations, agencies and institutions. He is a former senior government advisor to the Ministry of Planning in Saudi Arabia. Dr. Al-Ali has over 35 years of extensive international professional and practical experience of various developing and developed economies in Middle-East, the Gulf Countries, East Africa, West Africa, South Africa, North Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, South-East Asia, East Europe, West Europe and North America. He has written and published numerous works. He will present two paper (i) Macroeconomic management and public finance planning and (ii) The Characteristics of the Iraqi regions and Strategies for balanced and sustainable regional development

Dr. Ali Mirza, Senior Economic Advisor

Dr. Merza is economic expert, who acquired extensive experience in such development matters as economic restructuring/reforms and the role of petroleum in countries in the MENA region. He has special interest in Iraq’s and other oil producing countries’ economic/social conditions, institutional setups, and development policies. In the last five years his publications and presentations included subjects relating to petroleum, planning, and economic policies in Iraq. Recently, he has published a 500-page book, in Arabic, titled “Libya: Lost Opportunities and Renewed Hopes”. Currently, he is working on the institutional set-up of economic management and policies as well as on oil and gas in Iraq. Dr. Merza has worked for the Iraqi Ministries of Oil and Planning and for the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Dr. Zaid Abdul Hadi Haba, Senior IT Advisor

Dr. Zaid Abdul-Hadi Haba holds a BSc. (Honours) degree in Electrical Engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London University, an M.Sc. in Microwaves, and a Ph.D. in Microwaves, both from University College, London University, UK. He has forty three years of experience, mostly in information technology but also in university teaching and research, in various government and international institutions including:

  • Assistant Lecturer, College of Engineering, Baghdad University.
  • Post-Doctoral Fellow, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland.
  • Computer Director, State Company for Oil Projects (SCOP), Baghdad, Iraq.
  • Head of Data Services Department, Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Vienna, Austria.
  • Client Services Coordinator, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Abu Dhabi, UAE.
  • Director of Computer Services, Kuwait University, Kuwait.
  • Head, Information Technology, International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), Aleppo, Syria.
  • Head, Information Technology Services, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Vienna, Austria.

He retired from his last post as Head, Information Technology at (ICARDA) in August 2010. He has authored a number of papers and a book.
