Iran’s Export of Gas to Iraq Quadruples

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iraqi government on Saturday said the country has currently increased its import of gas from Iran by nearly fourfold.

Director of the Iraqi General Company for Electrical Energy Production Ali Ahmed said that Iraq has increased the volume of gas import from Iran in the current month (April) to between 30 and 40 million cubic meters/day.

Ahmed said the volume of gas imported by Iraq from the Islamic Republic earlier this year had been around 10 million cubic meters/day.

As the temperature is mounting in Iraq, the electricity demand in this country has increased, he said, adding that Iraq direly needs to import gas in order to generate energy.

He went on to say that the crisis of energy shortage in Iraq would intensify without the import of gas and electricity from Iran.

The US imposition of sanctions against Iran’s banking sector has caused Iraq to face critical problems in the payment of its debts to Iran for gas and electricity imports.
